Get ready for some of the best gravel roads in the Southeast! The Desoto National Forest has long been known for its vast road network and challenging Ragland Hills on the North side of the region. Riders will have the chance to take on courses ranging in length from 30 miles all the way to a full 100 miles. There is very, very little pavement on the course and the gravel ranges from hardpacked and fast to chunky and loose rock.
Start/Finish Location: The intersection of Highway 29 & FS 312 just South of New Augusta is the location of the Start/Finish area for this year's race. There is ample parking, and overnight dispersed camping is permitted in the Desoto National Forest. While we have enjoyed the creature comforts of the Armed Forces Museum, we want to get back to the roots of gravel racing.
Course Overview: 100-mile riders will cross through three counties (Perry, Greene and Forrest) while passing through the Leaf River Wildlife Management Area, Desoto National Forest and Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Area.
All courses will get to experience portions of the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Area, and it is not uncommon to see National Guard units exercising in the many open areas along the course. You'll also get to experience a wide array of wildlife. It's not uncommon to see deer, turkeys, wild hogs, and a variety of snakes (including our namesake Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake).
And don't let our Southern latitude fool you, the 100-mile course packs approximately 4,500' of climbing while the 100K course comes in at approximately 2,800' of elevation gain.
Aid Stations: Riders can expect to encounter multiple aid stations with water and a variety of snacks along their routes as follows (subject to change)
100 Mile - Mile 15, Mile 40, Mile 55, Mile 75
100K - Mile 15, Mile 40
50K - Mile 15, Mile 25
Drop Bags: Two (2) Drop Bag opportunities for 100 milers and One (1) Drop bag opportunity for 100K. These WILL NOT return to the Start/Finish area until after race is complete and aid stations are shut down for other riders on course.
Awards: Awards will be given to all riders placing in the top three of their respective categories.
Time Limit: We offer a VERY generous 12-hour time cut-off for 100 mile and 100K riders.
Results/Timing: Race will be chip timed with race results being updated and available throughout the day. QR code and link will be available on Friday, April 10th.
SAG: You are responsible for YOU. While we will be running a SAG wagon later in the day it is imperative that you carry the tools you need for basic bike repair (tube, plugs, CO2, master link, etc.). There will be phone numbers printed on the back of each bib for non-emergency assistance. For ALL emergencies it is recommended that you call 911!
Your Race Directors: This is a joint venture between South Mississippi Trail Alliance and Hub City Velo, both of which are cycling related non-profits based in the Hattiesburg area. All money raised from this event will stay in the community to support cycling and recreation related causes.
